Social Concerns Committee of St. Augustine of Canterbury
Parish
A Committee of the Parish Council
Established April 1, 2009
Fr. Stan asked me to chair a committee in St. Augustine
Parish that will coordinate parish efforts in the area
of Social Justice and Concerns. One of our goals will
be to move the ‘rectory driven’ social concern
activities into ‘parish driven’ efforts.
The committee will work to educate and inform the parishioners
as to the social needs and concerns in our parish and
our community and suggest ways to address them through
prayer and works. The balance of this work will be Advocacy
70% and Charitable Works 30%.
The two major areas to address:
1. National and International
Sister Parish in Guatemala
Catholic Church Appeals
2. Local
Elderly
Food Pantry
17TH Street Corridor Neighborhood Association
BEACON
Catholic Urban Programs
Jr. St. Vincent dePaul
The Committee will serve as the Contact between the
parish and the Diocese in the area of Social Concerns
and pass information from the Diocese on to the parish
and the reverse also on occasion. We will make use of
the Bulletin and parish monthly mailings as well as
the Diocesan paper as needed.
The Committee will meet quarterly beginning in June
2009 and set a plan to implement the goals and work
envisioned. The Committee will work within the framework
of the Parish Council and report to the Parish Council
on a monthly basis. Requests for involvement by this
committee received from the Parish Council or parishioners
in general will be lovingly considered. Anyone interested
in joining in the work of this committee is invited
to contact Fr. Stan or me and volunteer. The date and
time of the meeting will be set based on the times available
to the committee members.
Mission/Purpose Statement
The St. Augustine of Canterbury Social Concerns Committee
will serve as an avenue for education and action in
our parish based on the Spiritual and Corporal Works
of Mercy.
